Reflecții și Maxime vol. I.

Art cannot be isolated from the other branches of culture, and... it cannot claim privilege. It can neither dominate the other branches of culture, nor substitute for them, nor divorce them.

Philosophy elevates poetry to the rank of principle.

Poetry is an art of the word only to the extent that it is also an art of the non-word.

The poet who lives only through and from feelings is a slave to expedients.

In front of a new, authentic poet, you always have the paradoxical and wonderful feeling that you suddenly understand a language hitherto unknown to you, for the learning of which you have made no effort.

Through his works, the artist creates an alibi for the Last Judgment.

Hermetic Poetry - The Ivory Tower Enclosed in a Poet.

If the creators of art - the poet, the painter, the sculptor - were competitors of Nature, it is to be assumed that Nature herself would have assassinated and exterminated the tribe of these people. The very simple fact that the artist still exists is proof that his purpose is not to do the same thing with Nature.

Classicism without any romantic element is not classicism, but academicism.

The "essayist" is the novelist of an idea.

the poet. A blood donor at the hospital of words.

The poet is the only being who carries his heart apart from himself.

A literature that is fully aware of its mission does not aspire to become only an ensemble of original creations, however impressive such an ensemble may be in its proportions. Any literature must also become a mirror of universal literature.

Works of art, the religion of a time, borrow their character, rhythm, style, vigor from a spiritual attitude towards the world and life...

I cannot conceive of art without daring. But true art dims them, while art made for snobs inflates them.

Any older work of art has two authors: the artist who created it and the time that added the patina that contributes so much to the work's charm. A few centuries turn the sole original author into a mere collaborator on his own work.

Without a persistent deepening into the movements and social upheavals of the time, without a penetration into the hidden instincts of the nation, without the formation of broad views of life and nature, without the knowledge of other cultures of our time and past times, to which we assert ourselves and we crystallize our own ethnic-cultural spirit, how do artists imagine giving the world a work of art, in which all the conscious and unconscious beginnings of a human being can materialize?

Art is not meant to reproduce only a given state; art must restore life in its eternal creative movement, history in the dynamics of its aspirations, and thereby become an unparalleled stimulus to the exact realization of these aspirations.

The works of art... should be the expression of personalities, who have their consciousness crystallized in a determined conception of being and the purpose of existence, personalities rich in inner life, in questions, in doubts, in adventures and thoughts.

There are deep things which in the light of art can be understood much more clearly than in the light of science. It is said that the water of a sea is more transparent in the light of the moon than in the light of the sun.

Art means the joy of being yourself, living and belonging to society.

The true work of art is always human-sized. There is a certain relationship between an artist's global experience and the work that reflects it.

Literature, art and science must serve a social ideal, express the ideas and hopes of contemporaries, contribute to the victory of justice and freedom.

The writer must vibrate to the breezes of the national soul like Aeolian harps to the lightest breeze.

When he is not master of the language, however great he may be, / the poet is always a worthless scribe.

Poetry is in the events of history, in the passions of humanity, in the spectacle of nature, in the contemplation of infinity...

The mission of poetry is to constantly push the human race towards better lives, and to get there it must touch all the strings of life, tell the glories and miseries of humanity. To say only some and hide the others is not following his mission.

It is time for poetry to set in motion all its springs for a complete makeover, for a total reform of consciousness, change of all the ideas that man has had so far and has today about the world. To investigate in detail the sources of inequality in society and to destroy all social, political and religious forms and reforms, turning that only theoretical love of freedom and equality into practical and actual freedom and equality...

The mission of poetry is to strengthen souls by painting the passions, miseries and glories of humanity: to exalt truth, justice; to ennoble freedom; to descend into the heart of the people, to look for their pains, their tears.
